Summary

A novel interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) molecule found in peripheral neurons (N-IFN-gamma) exhibits antiviral and immune-modulating effects. Though distinct from lymphocyte-derived IFN-gamma, it shares functional similarities and targets.

  • An IFN-gamma immunoreactive molecule (N-IFN-gamma) has been identified in peripheral sensory neurons.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the protein nature and bioactivities of N-IFN-gamma.
  • To compare N-IFN-gamma with lymphocyte-derived recombinant IFN-gamma.

  • Antibody-affinity purification of N-IFN-gamma from rat trigeminal ganglia using monoclonal antibodies DB1 and DB16.
  • Sodium dodecylsulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE) for molecular mass determination.
  • In vitro assays to assess antiviral effects, antigen induction, and cell proliferation.
