Summary

Background:

  • US studies suggest increased tuberculosis (TB) infection risk with longer stays in elderly care facilities.
  • Limited data exists on TB infection risk for UK residents in similar settings.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if residing in UK elderly homes elevates the risk of tuberculosis infection.
  • To assess factors associated with tuberculin sensitivity in this population.

Main Methods:

  • A six-month survey of 2665 residents in Liverpool elderly homes.
  • Tuberculin (Heaf) testing and health questionnaires administered to all participants.

Main Results:

  • Tuberculin sensitivity (Heaf test positivity) decreased with age (OR 0.71 per decade).
  • No association found between length of stay and Heaf test positivity after adjusting for age.
  • Smoking (OR 1.59) and male gender (OR 1.62) were significantly associated with increased Heaf test positivity.

Conclusions:

  • Living in UK elderly homes is not linked to a higher rate of tuberculosis sensitivity.
  • Tuberculin sensitivity decreases with age.
  • Smoking and being male are associated with increased tuberculin sensitivity.
