Summary

Endometriosis appears to have a genetic component. Monozygotic twin sisters of patients had significantly higher rates of endometriosis compared to other sisters.

Background:

  • Endometriosis is a complex gynecological condition.
  • Genetic factors are suspected to play a role in its development.

Observation:

  • This study examined monozygotic (identical) twin sisters and mothers of patients diagnosed with endometriosis.
  • Medical histories were reviewed for 13 female relatives of endometriosis patients.

Findings:

  • 75% of monozygotic twin sisters of endometriosis patients also had the condition, a significantly higher rate (p < 0.0005) than other sisters (3.8%).
  • 38% of mothers had either endometriosis or adenomyosis.

Implications:

  • These findings strongly suggest a significant genetic influence in the etiology of endometriosis.
  • Further research into the genetic basis of endometriosis is warranted.
