Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Symptomatic renal leiomyoma is a rare, benign tumor.
  • It presents as a large, solitary, mesenchymatous lesion.
  • Distinguishing it from renal cell carcinoma is clinically significant.

Observation:

  • Current diagnostic imaging lacks precision in differentiating benign leiomyoma from malignant renal tumors.
  • The case presented highlights the diagnostic challenges.
  • Radical nephrectomy was performed due to diagnostic uncertainty.

Findings:

  • Renal leiomyoma requires differentiation from renal cell carcinoma.
  • Imaging modalities are insufficient for definitive benign diagnosis.
  • Surgical intervention is often required for definitive management.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case underscores the limitations of current imaging in diagnosing renal leiomyoma.
  • Nephrectomy remains a necessary treatment option when benignity cannot be confirmed preoperatively.
  • Further research into advanced imaging techniques may improve diagnostic accuracy for renal mesenchymal tumors.
