Summary

Piperonal, an effective pediculicide, also repels lice. A 2% piperonal spray demonstrated superior repellency compared to DEET, suggesting its potential for head lice control.

Area of Science:

  • Entomology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Piperonal was historically used as a pediculicide.
  • Piperonal exhibits a recently recognized repellent action against lice.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the repellent efficacy of piperonal against lice.
  • To compare piperonal's repellency with diethyltoluamide (DEET).

Main Methods:

  • Laboratory arena tests using clothing lice.
  • Testing a 2% piperonal pump-action spray.
  • Comparison with a 50% diethyltoluamide (DEET) solution.
  • Antennae-ablated lice used to investigate sensory detection.

Main Results:

  • 2% piperonal spray showed high repellency against lice, sustained for 24 hours.
  • Piperonal was nearly twice as effective as DEET.
  • Lice with removed antennae tips did not avoid piperonal-treated areas, indicating antennae are crucial for detection.

Conclusions:

  • Piperonal demonstrates significant repellent properties against lice.
  • The antennae are essential for lice to detect piperonal.
  • Piperonal shows promise as a novel agent for head lice control, especially given insecticide resistance concerns.
