Interactional approach to the difficult emergency department patient

• A method utilizing case-study vignettes was developed and implemented in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
• This approach aims to facilitate difficult physician-patient interactions.

Findings:

• Five case vignettes were examined to identify key principles for managing challenging encounters.
• General principles include active listening, maintaining calmness, demonstrating empathy, courtesy, objectivity, and transparent information sharing with patients and their families.
