Fetal puncture during midtrimester amniocentesis

L E Karp, P W Hayden

    Obstetrics and Gynecology
    |January 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Fetal puncture occurs in 1-3% of midtrimester amniocentesis procedures, potentially causing temporary neurologic damage. Parents should be informed of these risks before undergoing this diagnostic test.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Diagnostics
    • Fetal Medicine
    • Obstetrics

    Background:

    • Midtrimester amniocentesis is a common prenatal diagnostic procedure.
    • Assessing the safety and potential complications of amniocentesis is crucial for informed patient consent.

    Observation:

    • Four cases of fetal puncture during midtrimester amniocentesis were identified.
    • In one case, the infant experienced temporary neurologic damage.
    • These fetal injuries were not detected during initial neonatal examinations.

    Findings:

    • Fetal puncture occurs in an estimated 1-3% of midtrimester amniotic taps.
    • The long-term implications of fetal puncture remain unclear.
    • Neonatal examinations may not identify all instances of fetal injury.

    Implications:

    • Midtrimester amniocentesis should not be considered a routine or entirely benign procedure.
    • Prospective parents must be fully informed about the potential hazards, including fetal puncture, before consenting to amniocentesis.
    • Enhanced vigilance and improved detection methods for fetal injury may be warranted.
