    Summary

    Condyloma acuminatum, previously thought benign, can transform into squamous cell carcinoma. Giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Lowenstein tumor) also carries a risk of malignant degeneration, highlighting a potential link to penile cancer.

    Background:

    • Condyloma acuminatum was historically viewed as a benign anogenital wart.
    • Giant condyloma acuminatum (Buschke-Lowenstein tumor) presents as a locally invasive mass without initial histologic malignancy.

    • A literature review identified 65 cases of malignant transformation in Buschke-Lowenstein tumors.
    • The study highlights the potential for both condyloma acuminatum and Buschke-Lowenstein tumors to precede or coexist with squamous cell carcinoma.

    Findings:

    • Malignant degeneration can occur in both condyloma acuminatum and Buschke-Lowenstein tumors.
    • Squamous cell carcinoma can arise from or be associated with these HPV-related lesions.

    • These findings challenge the notion of condyloma acuminatum's exclusively benign nature.
