Conflict, competition, and coexistence; the mental hospital as parallel health and welfare systems

This paper views the public mental hospital as an ecological niche, occupied by patients and staff. Competition between these two interdependent groups for scarce public resources is seen as increasing the likelihood of conflict and interfering with the therapeutic goals of the institution.
