Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Genetics
  • Vascular Medicine

Background:

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a genetic heart muscle disease.
  • HCM is characterized by thickening of the heart muscle, particularly the septum.
  • Coronary artery aneurysms (CAAs) are abnormal dilations of the coronary arteries.

Observation:

  • A 40-year-old male with known HCM underwent cardiac catheterization.
  • Significant septal hypertrophy (approximately 5.5 cm) was noted.
  • Diffuse coronary artery aneurysms were incidentally discovered during angiography.

Findings:

  • The co-occurrence of diffuse coronary artery aneurysms and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is highly unusual.
  • No prior reports document this specific association in medical literature.
  • The patient's presentation highlights a potential, uncharacterized link between these cardiovascular conditions.

Implications:

  • This case may suggest an underlying shared pathophysiology or a novel complication of HCM.
  • Further research is warranted to explore the potential relationship between HCM and CAA.
  • Clinicians should consider screening for coronary artery abnormalities in HCM patients.
