Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage effectively decompressed obstructive jaundice in 13 patients. This minimally invasive technique offers a low-risk option for biliary decompression and diagnostic cholangiography.

    Area of Science:

    • Interventional Radiology
    • Hepatobiliary Surgery

    Background:

    • Obstructive jaundice poses significant clinical challenges requiring effective biliary decompression.
    • Traditional surgical approaches may carry higher risks and invasiveness.

    Observation:

    • Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD) was performed in 13 patients with obstructive jaundice.
    • A combination of percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography (PTC) technique and Seldinger angiography catheter was utilized.

    Findings:

    • Satisfactory bile outflow was achieved in 11 out of 13 cases.
    • The procedure demonstrated a low complication rate.
    • PTBD served as a valuable diagnostic aid through repeated cholangiography.

    Implications:

    Related Experiment Videos

  • PTBD is an ideal technique for biliary decompression prior to surgical resection due to its low risk and non-operative nature.
  • The technique facilitates pre- and post-operative diagnostic assessments via indwelling catheter cholangiography.
