Summary

A rare case of accessory mitral valve tissue caused a heart murmur and subaortic obstruction in an asymptomatic woman. Echocardiography revealed the mobile mass obstructing blood flow during systole.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Cardiac Imaging
  • Congenital Heart Disease

Background:

  • Congenital heart anomalies can present atypically.
  • Systolic ejection murmurs warrant thorough investigation.

Observation:

  • An echocardiogram revealed a mobile, sac-like mass on the anterior mitral leaflet and associated structures.
  • The mass prolapsed into the left ventricular outflow tract during systole.

Findings:

  • Accessory mitral valve tissue was identified as the cause of the mass.
  • This anomaly resulted in significant left ventricular outflow tract obstruction.
  • Doppler imaging showed high-velocity turbulent flow in the subaortic area.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of echocardiography in diagnosing uncommon cardiac masses.
