Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Hepatobiliary Surgery

Background:

  • Ingested biliary foreign bodies are typically associated with prior biliary operations.
  • Prior biliary surgery can predispose patients to enterobiliary reflux, facilitating foreign body migration.

Observation:

  • This report details an uncommon case of an ingested foreign body within the common bile duct.
  • The patient presented with no prior history of gastrointestinal surgery, a significant deviation from typical presentations.

Findings:

  • The presence of an ingested foreign body in the common bile duct without a history of surgery is unusual.
  • This case challenges the established understanding of risk factors for ingested biliary foreign bodies.

Implications:

  • This case expands the differential diagnosis for biliary obstruction.
  • Further investigation may be warranted to understand non-surgical pathways for ingested foreign bodies entering the biliary system.
