Summary

This study shows that perfluorooctylbromide (perflubron) emulsion inhibits platelet activation in pigs and humans. This perfluorocarbon emulsion may reduce side effects associated with perfluorocarbon use.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of a highly concentrated perfluorooctylbromide (perflubron) emulsion on porcine and human platelet activation and function.

Main Methods:

  • Ex-vivo porcine platelet aggregation was measured before and after perflubron emulsion infusion.
  • In vitro human platelet calcium flux was assessed in the presence of perflubron emulsion.

Main Results:

  • Perflubron emulsion inhibited collagen-, ADP-, and arachidonic acid-stimulated porcine platelet aggregation in a dose-dependent manner.
