Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Neurology
  • Preventive Medicine

Background:

  • Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in older adults.
  • Past beliefs suggested an inevitable increase in stroke risk with age.
  • Recent evidence highlights the efficacy of preventive strategies in older populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review and emphasize the effectiveness of current stroke prevention methods in the elderly.
  • To challenge the notion of immutable stroke risk progression in aging individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Review of clinical data and interventions for stroke risk reduction in older patients.
  • Analysis of outcomes from antihypertensive treatment, anticoagulation, aspirin use, and carotid endarterectomy.

Main Results:

  • Antihypertensive therapy lowers stroke risk, even in individuals over 80.
  • Warfarin anticoagulation is effective for non-valvular atrial fibrillation.
  • Low-dose aspirin reduces stroke risk in patients with TIA or nondisabling stroke.
  • Carotid endarterectomy benefits patients with symptomatic severe ipsilateral stenosis.

Conclusions:

  • Clinical strategies for stroke prevention in older adults are validated and effective.
  • These interventions should be implemented in at-risk elderly individuals.
  • Preventive measures can significantly decrease stroke incidence and its consequences.
