Infected urachal cysts can cause abdominal pain and urinary issues in young adults. Ultrasound is a key diagnostic tool for these rare urachal remnant pathologies.

Area of Science:

  • Urology
  • Medical Imaging

Background:

  • Urachal remnants are congenital anomalies with diverse associated pathologies.
  • Infections of urachal remnants, such as urachal cysts, are uncommon but clinically significant.

Observation:

  • A case of infected urachal cyst in a young adult male presented with dysuria, lower abdominal pain, and fever.
  • Diagnostic imaging modalities including ultrasound, cystography, and computed tomography (CT) were utilized.

Findings:

  • Ultrasound is frequently the preferred imaging modality for diagnosing urachal remnant infections.
  • The clinical presentation mimicked other acute abdominal and pelvic conditions.

Implications:

  • Infection of urachal remnants should be considered in the differential diagnosis of midline lower abdominal masses or acute pain in young adults.
