Tuberculous otitis media is a rare condition that can cause otorrhoea and facial paralysis. Early diagnosis is challenging but crucial for effective treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Tuberculous otitis media (TOM) is an uncommon manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis.
  • It often presents insidiously, making early diagnosis difficult.

Observation:

  • Two cases of TOM are presented, both exhibiting otorrhoea and facial paralysis.
  • These symptoms, while indicative of otitis media, can mask the underlying tuberculous etiology.

Findings:

  • The diagnostic challenges associated with TOM are highlighted.
  • Clinical features from a review of other series are discussed to aid recognition.

Implications:

  • Increased awareness of TOM is needed among clinicians, especially in endemic areas.
