Background:

  • Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory bowel disease.
  • Severe and moderately severe UC cases often require intensive treatment strategies.
  • Pulsed steroid therapy is a potential therapeutic option for managing UC flares.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pulsed steroid therapy in patients with severe and moderately severe ulcerative colitis.
  • To assess clinical and endoscopic outcomes following pulsed corticosteroid administration.

Main Methods:

  • A total of 13 patients (6 severe, 7 moderate) with ulcerative colitis received pulsed steroid therapy.
  • The therapy involved intravenous administration of hydrocortisone or methylprednisolone (0.5-1g daily) for 3 consecutive days, followed by 4 days off, over 3-6 courses.
