Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Endocrinology
  • Developmental Biology
  • Head and Neck Surgery

Background:

  • Ectopic thyroid tissue refers to thyroid tissue found outside its normal location in the neck.
  • Thyroid ectopy can present with various symptoms depending on its location and size.
  • Early diagnosis is crucial for managing potential complications.

Observation:

  • A unique case of ectopic thyroid tissue is presented in an 8-year-old female.
  • The initial diagnostic sign was a visible thyroid remnant at the tongue's base.
  • No thyroid dysfunction was observed during the diagnostic evaluation.

Findings:

  • Morphological evidence of thyroid tissue at the base of the tongue was the primary diagnostic finding.
  • The ectopic thyroid tissue did not impair thyroid function.

Related Experiment Videos

  • This presentation highlights an unusual manifestation of thyroid ectopy.
  • Implications:

    • This case underscores the importance of thorough diagnostic evaluation for ectopic thyroid tissue, even in the absence of functional abnormalities.
    • Understanding rare presentations of thyroid ectopy can improve diagnostic accuracy in pediatric cases.
    • Further research into the developmental pathways of thyroid ectopy may offer insights into congenital anomalies.
