Summary

Mexiletine effectively treated phantom limb pain in a study of 31 patients. Many experienced good results with mexiletine alone or combined with clonidine, showing promise for this chronic pain condition.

Background:

  • Phantom limb pain is a challenging neurological condition.
  • Effective pharmacologic treatments remain limited.

Observation:

  • This study evaluated mexiletine in 31 patients with true phantom limb pain.
  • An open-label design assessed treatment response.

Findings:

  • Eighteen patients (58%) showed good to excellent results with mexiletine monotherapy.
  • Eleven patients (35%) responded well to a combination of mexiletine and clonidine.
  • Two patients (6%) did not respond to either treatment.
  • Three patients (10%) discontinued mexiletine due to nausea.

Implications:

  • Mexiletine demonstrates significant efficacy in managing phantom limb pain.
  • Combination therapy with clonidine may benefit non-responders.
  • Further research into mexiletine's role in neuropathic pain is warranted.
