Background:

Annulate lamellae (AL) are cytoplasmic structures found in various cell types.
Their presence and function in human spermatogenesis are not fully understood.
Previous studies have suggested potential roles in protein synthesis and transport.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the ultrastructural characteristics and localization of annulate lamellae in normal human testicular tissue.
To elucidate the relationship between annulate lamellae and other cellular organelles during spermatogenesis.

Main Methods:

Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine ultrathin sections of normal human testicular biopsies.
High-resolution imaging allowed detailed visualization of annulate lamellae and associated cellular structures.

Main Results:

Annulate lamellae were identified in the cytoplasm of human primary spermatocytes and spermatids.
In primary spermatocytes, AL were located near the nucleus, appearing as stacked membranes with pore-like structures.
In spermatids, AL were more numerous, continuous with the nuclear envelope or endoplasmic reticulum, and showed terminal dilations.

Conclusions:

Annulate lamellae are a component of human spermatocytes and spermatids, suggesting a role in male germ cell development.
The observed connections to the endoplasmic reticulum indicate a potential origin or interaction with the secretory pathway.
The breakdown of AL in residual bodies suggests their involvement in the final stages of sperm maturation or packaging.
