Summary

Women with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience thyroid dysfunction at least three times more often than those with osteoarthritis or fibromyalgia. This increased frequency of thyroid issues in RA patients warrants further investigation.

Area of Science:

  • Rheumatology
  • Endocrinology

Background:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease.
  • Thyroid dysfunction is a common endocrine disorder.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the frequency of thyroid dysfunction in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA).

Main Methods:

  • A prospective survey compared RA patients with a control group (osteoarthritis/fibromyalgia).
  • Evaluations included medical history, physical exams, and thyroid function tests (serum thyroxine, free thyroxine, triiodothyronine, TSH), rheumatoid factor, and antinuclear antibodies.

Main Results:

  • 30% of women with RA (29/91) showed evidence of thyroid dysfunction.
  • 11% of controls (10/93) had thyroid dysfunction.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The excess thyroid dysfunction in RA patients included hypothyroidism and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, independent of disease duration or autoantibody status.
  • Conclusions:

    • Thyroid dysfunction is significantly more prevalent in women with RA compared to women with non-inflammatory rheumatic conditions.
    • The findings suggest a potential link between RA and thyroid autoimmunity or dysfunction.
