Area of Science:

  • Otolaryngology
  • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Recurrent throat infections can be associated with various underlying pathologies.
  • Tonsilloliths, calcifications within the tonsillar crypts, are typically small but can occasionally grow to significant sizes.

Observation:

  • A 26-year-old male presented with symptoms suggestive of a peritonsillar abscess, including recurrent throat infections.
  • During admission, a large tonsillolith was spontaneously expelled.
  • The expelled tonsillolith measured 30 x 26 x 16 mm and weighed 8.5 g.

Findings:

  • Chemical analysis confirmed the tonsillolith was composed of calcium phosphate.
  • This case represents the largest tonsillolith documented in Japan to date.
  • The patient subsequently underwent a tonsillectomy.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for significant tonsillolith growth and spontaneous expulsion.
  • Understanding the composition of tonsilloliths can aid in diagnosis and management.
  • Further research into the etiology and growth factors of large tonsilloliths is warranted.
