Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Microsporidia are opportunistic pathogens increasingly identified in individuals with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
  • Ocular and enteric infections are the most common presentations of microsporidiosis in immunocompromised patients.

Observation:

  • This paper details a case of microsporidial keratoconjunctivitis in a patient diagnosed with AIDS.
  • The patient presented with ocular symptoms indicative of a fungal or parasitic infection.

Findings:

  • The microsporidial infection causing keratoconjunctivitis showed a positive response to topical treatment.
  • Dibromopropamidine isethionate ointment was effective in managing the ocular symptoms.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the efficacy of dibromopropamidine isethionate in treating microsporidial ocular infections.
  • It underscores the importance of considering microsporidiosis in the differential diagnosis of eye infections in AIDS patients.
