Sensitivity of Vibrio spp. to fosfomycin
Related Experiment Videos
Abstract:
The behavior of 15 strains of Vibrio eltor, halophilic Vibrios and NAG vibrios with respect to 14 antibiotics was studied by means of the single disc method in Mueller-Hinton agar. In the case of fosfomycin, the MIC for all of them was determined as well by the technique of progressive dilutions in solid medium. No conclusions were made because of the small number of strains studied. Nevertheless, it can be asserted that there is a marked difference in the activity of fosfomycin, since it was minimal against V. eltor, moderate against the NAGs and maximal against the halophilic Vibrio.
Insights
Fosfomycin activity varied significantly across Vibrio species. Minimal activity was observed against Vibrio eltor, moderate against non-agglutinable (NAG) Vibrios, and maximal against halophilic Vibrios, indicating distinct resistance patterns.
Area of Science:
- Microbiology
- Antimicrobial Resistance
- Bacteriology
Background:
- Vibrio species are significant human pathogens, causing various infections.
- Understanding antibiotic susceptibility is crucial for effective treatment strategies.
- Fosfomycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a unique mechanism of action.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the in vitro susceptibility of Vibrio eltor, halophilic Vibrios, and non-agglutinable (NAG) Vibrios to 14 different antibiotics.
- To specifically evaluate the activity of fosfomycin against these Vibrio strains.
- To determine the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of fosfomycin for the tested strains.
Main Methods:
- Antibiotic susceptibility testing was performed using the single disc diffusion method on Mueller-Hinton agar for 14 antibiotics.
- Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of fosfomycin was determined using progressive dilutions in a solid medium.
- Fifteen strains representing Vibrio eltor, halophilic Vibrios, and NAG Vibrios were analyzed.
Main Results:
- A notable difference in fosfomycin activity was observed across the tested Vibrio groups.
- Fosfomycin exhibited minimal activity against Vibrio eltor strains.
- Moderate activity was recorded against NAG Vibrio strains, while maximal activity was observed against halophilic Vibrio strains.
Conclusions:
- Fosfomycin demonstrates differential efficacy against various Vibrio species.
- Halophilic Vibrios appear most susceptible to fosfomycin, while Vibrio eltor shows the least susceptibility.
- Further studies with a larger number of strains are warranted to establish definitive conclusions on fosfomycin's role in treating Vibrio infections.
