Summary

This study found that a 12-week moderate resistance exercise program is safe and effective for patients with slowly progressive neuromuscular diseases (NMD). The strengthening program led to significant improvements in muscle strength for both NMD patients and controls.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the safety and efficacy of a 12-week moderate resistance exercise program in patients with slowly progressive neuromuscular diseases (NMD).

  • A 12-week home-based, moderate resistance exercise program using ankle/wrist weights and hand grips was implemented.
  • Subjects (27 NMD patients, 14 controls) exercised 3 days/week, with one body side randomly selected for training.
  • Maximal isokinetic and isometric strength were measured at baseline, week 4, and week 12.
