Selective immunoglobulin M deficiency in foals

L E Perryman, T C McGuire, B J Hilbert

Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association
    |January 15, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Selective immunoglobulin M deficiency was diagnosed in five foals presenting with respiratory issues. This condition, characterized by low serum IgM, was associated with potential bacterial infections in affected animals.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Immunology
    • Equine Medicine
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Selective immunoglobulin M (IgM) deficiency is an uncommon immunodeficiency.
    • Immunodeficiencies can predispose animals to recurrent or severe infections.
    • Respiratory tract infections are common in foals.

    Observation:

    • Five foals were diagnosed with selective immunoglobulin M deficiency.
    • All affected foals exhibited clinical signs or lesions related to the respiratory tract.
    • Low serum IgM concentrations (more than 2 standard deviations below the normal mean) were the diagnostic criterion.

    Findings:

    • Klebsiella sp. was isolated from joint fluids, bronchial lymph nodes, or tracheal washings in three of the five foals.
    • This suggests a potential link between selective IgM deficiency and bacterial infections, particularly in the respiratory system.
    • The findings highlight the clinical relevance of IgM deficiency in equine respiratory health.

    Implications:

    • Selective IgM deficiency may increase susceptibility to bacterial pathogens in foals.
    • Early diagnosis and targeted antimicrobial therapy are crucial for managing affected foals.
    • Further research is warranted to understand the pathogenesis and long-term outcomes of this condition in horses.
