Cognitive-behavioral and self-management models highlight patient appraisals in chronic pain.

Purpose of the Study:

To develop and validate a self-report instrument measuring two key patient appraisal aspects of chronic pain.
Introduce the constructs of Pain Intrusion and Pain Accommodation.

Main Methods:

Factor analysis was used to derive two reliable scales from a patient sample.
Confirmatory factor analysis and internal consistency/stability analyses were performed on a second sample.

Main Results:

Pain Intrusion correlates with increased depressive symptoms and affective distress behaviors.
