Summary

This study found no increased incidence of autoimmune disorders in bullous pemphigoid (BP) patients. Furthermore, no specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype was associated with a predisposition to bullous pemphigoid.

Area of Science:

  • Immunodermatology
  • Genetics
  • Autoimmunity

Background:

  • Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is often reported with autoimmune disorders.
  • Previous studies lacked large-scale, controlled investigations into this association.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if autoimmune disorders are more common in patients with bullous pemphigoid.
  • To identify any specific human leukocyte antigen (HLA) haplotype linked to bullous pemphigoid.

Main Methods:

  • Compared 108 bullous pemphigoid patients with 108 matched controls.
  • Performed HLA typing (A, B, C, DR loci) on 55 bullous pemphigoid patients.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference in autoimmune disorder incidence between bullous pemphigoid patients and controls.
  • Bullous pemphigoid patient haplotypes did not differ from the general population.

Conclusions:

  • Bullous pemphigoid is not associated with an increased incidence of other autoimmune disorders.
  • No specific HLA haplotype confers a predisposition to bullous pemphigoid.
