Evaluation of a worker with possible formaldehyde-induced asthma

Formaldehyde exposure can cause bronchospasm, but immunologically mediated asthma due to formaldehyde is extremely rare. This case study found no conclusive evidence of formaldehyde-induced asthma despite compatible symptoms and positive serologic tests.

Implications:
- The findings suggest that immunologically mediated asthma caused by formaldehyde is exceptionally rare, if it occurs at all.
- Despite compatible clinical history and positive immunological markers, the negative challenge tests indicate non-immunological mechanisms or a lack of causal link for this worker's symptoms.
