Summary

Laparoscopic appendectomy offers faster recovery and less pain than traditional surgery for appendicitis. While operative time is longer, patients return to normal activities sooner with fewer complications.

Background:

  • Acute appendicitis is a common surgical emergency.
  • Laparoscopic appendectomy is increasingly adopted, but its benefits over traditional appendectomy require further study.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare laparoscopic appendectomy with traditional appendectomy regarding operative difficulty, hospital stay, costs, complications, pain, and convalescence.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study of 200 patients with acute appendicitis.
  • 101 patients underwent traditional appendectomy, and 99 underwent laparoscopic appendectomy.
  • Outcomes including operating time, hospital stay, pain, and recovery metrics were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • Laparoscopic appendectomy had a longer operating time (60.1 vs 45.4 minutes) but resulted in a shorter hospital stay (2.7 vs 3.8 days).
