Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate physiological and biochemical changes associated with aging.
  • To identify biomarkers that remain stable or change significantly over time.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional and longitudinal study designs were employed.
  • Data collected from 2,281 individuals in a cross-sectional study and 864 subjects in a 20-year longitudinal follow-up.
  • Analysis of various biochemical markers, including erythrocyte sedimentation rate, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and lipid profiles.

Main Results:

  • Several key biochemical markers demonstrated stability with age, including hemoglobin, hematocrit, serum total protein, albumin, liver function tests, glucose, creatinine, triglyceride, and HDL-cholesterol.
  • Significant age-related changes were observed in high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, immunoglobulins, rheumatoid factors, antinuclear factors, lymphocyte morphology, thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), triiodothyronine (T3) concentration, and systolic blood pressure.

Conclusions:

  • Many biochemical parameters remain unchanged throughout the aging process.
  • Specific immune markers, thyroid hormones, and cardiovascular indicators exhibit significant age-related variability.
