Severe loin pain can signal serious retroperitoneal malignancies, not just ureteric colic. This study highlights the importance of considering cancer in patients with persistent flank pain when other diagnoses are unclear.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Urology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Ureteric colic is a common cause of severe loin pain radiating to the groin.
  • Diagnostic challenges arise when typical presentations are absent.

Observation:

  • Six patients presented with severe loin pain and suspected ureteric colic.
  • Three patients were diagnosed with pancreatic carcinoma.
  • Three patients had retroperitoneal lymph node metastases.

Findings:

  • Retroperitoneal malignancies can manifest as severe loin pain.
  • Carcinoma of the pancreas and lymph node metastases were identified in this cohort.
  • Loin pain is an uncommon but significant presenting symptom for these cancers.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Clinicians should consider retroperitoneal malignancies in the differential diagnosis of unexplained loin pain.
  • Early consideration of advanced cancers can improve patient outcomes.
  • Further research into the atypical presentations of retroperitoneal malignancies is warranted.
