A case of brain echinococcal disease in a vegetarian man presented with seizures. Surgical removal of the cyst led to seizure freedom, highlighting CT scan

Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Neurocysticercosis is a common cause of seizures in endemic areas.
  • Echinococcal disease of the brain is rare but can present with focal neurological deficits.

Observation:

  • A 29-year-old vegetarian agriculturist presented with focal seizures and secondary generalization.
  • Diagnostic workup revealed a right frontoparietal lesion on CT scan, elevated eosinophils, and positive serological tests for Echinococcus.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision of the isolated, contrast-enhancing cyst confirmed echinococcal disease.
  • The patient remained seizure-free for two years post-operatively with anticonvulsant therapy.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • CT scan is a superior neurodiagnostic tool for brain echinococcal disease compared to serological tests.
  • Complete surgical removal of cerebral hydatid cysts offers a favorable prognosis.
