1Pediatric Ophthalmology Service, Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Insights
Strabismus, an eye misalignment in children, can impact development. Early detection by primary care physicians is crucial for timely referral and optimal visual outcomes.
Area of Science:
- Ophthalmology
- Pediatrics
- Developmental Biology
Background:
- Strabismus is a prevalent condition in pediatric populations.
- Ocular misalignment can lead to significant visual, physical, and psychological developmental issues.
- Numerous underlying causes contribute to strabismus.
Purpose of the Study:
- To emphasize the importance of primary care physicians in evaluating pediatric ocular motility.
- To highlight the need for understanding strabismus pathophysiology and risk factors.
- To guide timely referrals to ophthalmologists for suspected or detected strabismic disorders.
Main Methods:
- Review of existing literature on pediatric strabismus.
- Analysis of the role of primary care in early detection.
- Guidance on clinical evaluation of ocular motility.
Main Results:
- Primary care physicians play a vital role in identifying children at risk for strabismus.
- Understanding basic pathophysiology aids in recognizing common strabismus disorders.
- Prompt referral is essential for effective management.
Conclusions:
- Primary care physicians require specific skills in evaluating pediatric eye alignment.
- Knowledge of strabismus pathophysiology and risk factors is essential for early intervention.
- Effective collaboration between primary care and ophthalmology ensures better patient outcomes.
Abstract:
Strabismus is a common ocular abnormality in children and can have significant effects on visual, physical, and psychological development. The causes of ocular misalignment are numerous. Primary care physicians should be skilled in the evaluation of ocular motility in children. They also should understand the basic pathophysiology of common strabismus disorders and be able to identify those children at risk. This knowledge will aid in making a proper referral to an ophthalmologist when a strabismic disorder is suspected or detected.
