    Summary

    Transient brain imaging changes in patients with hyperostosis frontalis interna were observed. These diminished activities on early radionuclide scans resolved on later studies, aiding diagnosis.

    Background:

    • Hyperostosis frontalis interna (HFI) is a condition characterized by thickening of the inner table of the frontal bone.
    • Its impact on brain imaging, particularly radionuclide studies, is not well-documented.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To describe and characterize transient changes observed on radionuclide brain imaging in patients diagnosed with hyperostosis frontalis interna.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 5 patients with diagnosed hyperostosis frontalis interna.
    • Review of early and subsequent radionuclide brain imaging (e.g., SPECT or PET scans).
    • Correlation with radiographic findings (skull X-rays).

    Main Results:

    • Transient diminution of radionuclide activity was noted in the frontal regions on initial brain scans in all 5 patients.
    • This diminished activity resolved or improved significantly on follow-up radionuclide studies.
    • Radiographs confirmed hyperostosis frontalis interna in all cases.
    • Excellent correlation between imaging modalities was observed in 3 patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Transient frontal hypoperfusion or altered metabolism on radionuclide imaging can be associated with hyperostosis frontalis interna.
    • This imaging pattern should be considered in the differential diagnosis when reduced activity is observed in the frontal brain areas.
    • Radionuclide imaging, alongside radiography, can aid in the diagnosis and understanding of HFI-related changes.
