Corynebacterium striatum, rarely a pathogen, caused diverse infections in six patients, including catheter-related infections and conjunctivitis. This common bacterium should be recognized as a potential pathogen in various hosts.

Area of Science:

  • Microbiology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • Nondiphtherial corynebacteria are common human commensals, rarely causing disease.
  • Corynebacterium striatum is infrequently reported as a pathogen, typically in immunocompromised individuals.

Observation:

  • Six cases of Corynebacterium striatum infection or co-infection were identified.
  • This study reports novel C. striatum infections: central venous catheter exit sites, thrombophlebitis, conjunctivitis, and chorioamnionitis.
  • Potential roles in peritonitis and pyogenic granuloma were also observed.

Findings:

  • All C. striatum isolates were susceptible to vancomycin and aminoglycosides.
  • Most isolates were susceptible to penicillin G, imipenem, and ciprofloxacin, contrasting with resistant Corynebacterium jeikeium.

Related Experiment Videos

  • C. striatum demonstrated susceptibility to common antibiotics.
  • Implications:

    • Corynebacterium striatum should be considered a potential pathogen in both immunocompromised and healthy individuals.
    • Early recognition and appropriate antimicrobial therapy can lead to successful infection resolution.
    • This broadens the understanding of C. striatum's clinical significance.
