Summary

Most elderly individuals use multiple medications, often including nonprescription drugs. Despite good knowledge and compliance, advanced age and reduced wellbeing correlate with polypharmacy, challenging stereotypes about older adults and medication management.

Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Pharmacology
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Polypharmacy (multiple medication use) is common among the elderly.
  • Understanding medication use patterns and associated factors in older adults is crucial for public health.
  • Stereotypes often portray elderly individuals as having poor medication knowledge and compliance.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine medication use and its correlates in urban-dwelling elderly people.
  • To assess knowledge and compliance with medication instructions.
  • To investigate associations between multiple medication use and demographic/wellbeing factors.

Main Methods:

  • Randomly selected sample of 178 urban-dwelling elderly participants.
  • Data collection on current medication use (prescription and nonprescription).

Related Experiment Videos

  • Assessment of medication knowledge, compliance, and wellbeing indicators.
  • Main Results:

    • 89% of participants used medication, with 44% using four or more concurrently (polypharmacy).
    • Hypertension treatment was the most frequent reason for medication use.
    • Polypharmacy was associated with advanced age, supervised accommodation, and reduced wellbeing, but not cognitive function.

    Conclusions:

    • Elderly individuals demonstrate good medication knowledge and compliance, challenging negative stereotypes.
    • Extensive medication and polypharmacy use necessitates further investigation into appropriateness.
    • Findings highlight the need for detailed studies on medication use patterns in the aging population.
