Summary

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Public Health
  • Diagnostic Imaging

Background:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a serious condition.
  • Screening programs aim to detect AAA early for timely intervention.
  • General Practice-based screening offers a community-level approach.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms in a screened population.
  • To assess the practicalities, costs, and benefits of a community-based AAA screening program.

Main Methods:

  • Ultrasound examination of the abdominal aorta was offered to 5337 men aged 65.
  • Screening was conducted between September 1990 and October 1992.
  • Attendance rate and aortic diameter measurements were recorded.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 4232 (79%) men attended the screening.
  • 91.6% had normal aortic diameters (≤2.5 cm).
  • 1.3% had an aortic diameter of 4.0 cm or greater, indicating AAA.

Conclusions:

  • Community-based screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms in older men is feasible.
  • The prevalence of significant AAA requiring intervention was low in this cohort.
  • Further analysis of costs and benefits is warranted for program implementation.
