Summary

Early beryllium disease can be detected using the beryllium lymphocyte transformation test (BeLT) before symptoms appear. Pulmonary vascular abnormalities and gas exchange issues are early signs, even before lung function decline is evident.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate early pulmonary physiologic abnormalities in beryllium disease.
  • To compare physiological findings between early, surveillance-identified cases and symptomatic, clinically-identified cases.

Main Methods:

  • Compared spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, arterial blood gases, and exercise capacity.
  • Two groups studied: surveillance-identified early beryllium disease (n=21) and clinically-identified beryllium disease (n=15).

    • Early disease showed minimal restriction or diffusing capacity issues, unlike later stages.

    • Pulmonary vascular dysfunction is an early indicator in beryllium-related lung disease.
