    Summary

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition where the upper airway obstructs during sleep, despite continued respiratory effort. Weight loss and nasal continuous positive airway pressure are effective treatments.

    Area of Science:

    • Sleep Medicine
    • Respiratory Medicine
    • Otolaryngology

    Background:

    • Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) involves upper airway obstruction during sleep with ongoing respiratory effort.
    • Common causes include obesity, alcohol consumption, and sedative use.
    • Symptoms manifest as unrefreshed sleep, morning headaches, drowsiness, and can lead to depression and cognitive impairment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To outline the characteristics, causes, symptoms, and management of obstructive sleep apnoea.
    • To highlight effective treatment strategies for OSA.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of clinical presentation and contributing factors for OSA.
    • Discussion of diagnostic indicators and patient-reported symptoms.
    • Evaluation of established and potential therapeutic interventions.

    Main Results:

    • Weight loss is identified as a primary treatment modality for OSA.
    • Mechanical nocturnal support, such as nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), is crucial for preventing airway collapse.
    • Nasal CPAP is presented as a simple and effective non-surgical treatment option.

    Conclusions:

    • OSA is a significant sleep disorder with multifactorial causes and considerable patient impact.
    • A combination of lifestyle changes (weight loss) and mechanical support (nasal CPAP) offers effective management.
    • Nasal CPAP provides a straightforward and successful non-surgical approach to treating obstructive sleep apnoea.
