[Bronchobiliary fistula. Pathogenesis, diagnosis, therapy]

M Clemens, G Wittrin, L Safrany

Der Chirurg; Zeitschrift Fur Alle Gebiete Der Operativen Medizen
    |January 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Bronchobiliary fistulas, often caused by bile duct blockages, can be diagnosed using cholangio-bronchography. Surgical removal of the obstruction typically leads to spontaneous fistula healing.

    Area of Science:

    • Gastroenterology
    • Pulmonology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Bronchobiliary fistula is a rare but serious complication.
    • Common bile duct stenosis is a frequent underlying cause.

    Observation:

    • This case illustrates the pathomechanism of bronchobiliary fistula formation.
    • The diagnostic utility of combined cholangio-bronchography is highlighted.

    Findings:

    • Stenosing lesions of the common bile duct are the primary etiology.
    • Surgical intervention aims to relieve the obstruction.

    Implications:

    • Prompt diagnosis and treatment are crucial for patient outcomes.
    • Spontaneous resolution of the fistula often follows successful management of the obstruction.
