Complications of thoracoscopy

Summary

Video-assisted thoracoscopy is a safe and effective thoracic surgery technique. Complications are acceptable, with shorter hospital stays and faster recovery compared to traditional thoracotomy.

Background:

Thoracoscopy has evolved from a diagnostic tool to a therapeutic procedure.
Video-assisted techniques have significantly expanded the applications of thoracoscopy in chest pathology.

Purpose of the Study:

To evaluate the complication rates of video-assisted thoracoscopy.
To provide perspective on the rising use of this surgical technique.

Main Methods:

Retrospective review of 266 thoracoscopic procedures performed between December 1991 and December 1992.
Analysis of complications, including prolonged air leak, wound infections, bleeding, and conversion to thoracotomy.

Main Results:

No deaths occurred in 266 procedures.
Overall complication rate was 10%, with prolonged air leak (3.7%) being most common.
11 patients (4.1%) required conversion to thoracotomy.

Conclusions:

Video-assisted thoracoscopy demonstrates an acceptable complication profile, comparable to thoracotomy.
Patients experience shorter hospital stays, reduced pain, and quicker return to activity.
Complication rates are expected to decrease with increased surgeon experience.
