Summary

Rarely, breast cancer can be found at the biopsy site even after a negative result. Surgeons should consider repeat biopsies for suspicious masses at prior biopsy locations.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Open breast biopsy is a reliable diagnostic method for palpable breast masses.
  • False-negative results can occur, leading to delayed cancer diagnosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review cases where breast cancer was diagnosed at the site of a previously benign biopsy.
  • To highlight the importance of vigilance for recurrent masses at biopsy sites.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of eight patients.
  • Analysis of diagnostic intervals between initial negative biopsy and subsequent cancer diagnosis.

Main Results:

  • Breast cancer was identified at the site of a prior negative biopsy in eight patients.
  • Diagnosis occurred between 4 months and 3 years after the initial negative biopsy.

Conclusions:

  • Cancer can develop or be missed at a biopsy site despite an initial benign finding.
  • Persistent or recurrent masses at prior biopsy sites warrant further investigation, potentially including repeat excision.
