    Summary

Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) is a rare but serious airway disease caused by human papillomavirus. Combining laser therapy with interferon may reduce the need for repeated laser treatments in RRP patients.

    Area of Science:

    • Otolaryngology
    • Pediatric Pulmonology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Background:

    • Recurrent respiratory papillomatosis (RRP) affects the respiratory tract in children and adults.
    • The accepted etiology is human papillomavirus (HPV) infection.
    • RRP can cause life-threatening airway obstruction, particularly in children.

    Observation:

    • A case study of a 5-year-old female with RRP since age 2, undergoing over 80 laser treatments in 3 years.
    • Concurrent administration of laser therapy and interferon was noted.
    • Significant challenges exist for anesthesiologists due to lesion variability and shared surgical fields.

    Findings:

    • Concurrent laser and interferon therapy appeared to reduce the frequency of laser treatments for this patient.
    • Anesthetic management requires meticulous planning and coordination for RRP patients.
    • Surgical laser remains the most effective treatment for controlling RRP lesions.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a potential adjunctive therapy to reduce surgical burden in RRP.
    • Improved anesthetic protocols are crucial for managing patients with laryngeal RRP.
    • Further research into HPV-related airway diseases and their management is warranted.
