Summary

Human pituitary intermediate lobe activity, measured by alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH) immunoreactivity, declines throughout pregnancy and rapidly after birth. Stress, including parturition, stimulates MSH release, with levels decreasing post-delivery.
