Summary

The human cervix produces interleukin-8 (IL-8) in vitro, a process potentially influenced by steroid hormones. This suggests IL-8 plays a key role in cervical ripening mediated by neutrophils.

Background:

  • Interleukin-8 (IL-8) is a cytokine involved in inflammation and immune responses.
  • Cervical ripening is a complex process involving hormonal and inflammatory changes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if the human cervix produces IL-8 in vitro.
  • To investigate if IL-8 production can be stimulated.
  • To examine the simultaneous production of prostaglandins.

  • Cervical tissue explants from 48 women (pregnant, nonpregnant, postmenopausal) were cultured.
  • Culture media were analyzed for IL-8 and prostaglandin E2.
  • Statistical analysis included ANOVA and Newman-Keuls tests.
