This study reviewed 100 patients with displaced Colles

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Traumatology
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Colles' fractures are common wrist fractures, but long-term outcomes are not well-documented.
  • Previous literature lacks data on Colles' fracture outcomes beyond six years post-injury.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the long-term functional and radiographic outcomes of displaced Colles' fractures.
  • To evaluate the incidence of osteoarthrosis and reflex sympathetic dystrophy (algodystrophy) at ten years.
  • To identify factors correlating with final outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 100 consecutive patients with displaced Colles' fractures was reviewed.
  • Objective assessments included function, radiographic anatomy, osteoarthrosis, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data were collected ten years after the initial injury.
  • Main Results:

    • Eighty-five percent of surviving patients reported a satisfactory outcome at ten years.
    • Forty-two percent experienced functional improvement, while 20% showed deterioration over the decade.
    • Initial and ten-year radial shortening and early finger stiffness were significant predictors of final outcome.
    • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy was present in 62% of unsatisfactory outcomes versus 6% of satisfactory outcomes.
    • Osteoarthrosis was found in 37% of patients, but only associated with unsatisfactory outcomes in 4%.

    Conclusions:

    • Displaced Colles' fractures can have a satisfactory long-term outcome in the majority of patients.
    • Radial shortening and early stiffness are key indicators of poorer long-term results.
    • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is a significant factor in unsatisfactory outcomes, while osteoarthrosis is less commonly associated with poor results.
