Summary

This study details a successful injectable anesthesia protocol for a 27-year-old horse undergoing cobalt therapy for squamous cell carcinoma. The horse tolerated repeated anesthesia without complications, demonstrating the feasibility of this approach.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Anesthesiology
  • Equine Oncology
  • Radiation Therapy

Background:

  • A 27-year-old horse required repetitive anesthesia for cobalt therapy of a squamous cell carcinoma in the left paranasal sinus.
  • Facility limitations necessitated injectable anesthesia for transport to and from the radiation therapy room.

Observation:

  • The anesthetic regimen involved xylazine and butorphanol for pre-anesthesia, followed by tiletamine-zolazepam for induction and maintenance.
  • Dosing adjustments were made after initial anesthetic episodes, reducing xylazine and omitting butorphanol.
  • Ketamine boluses were administered on two occasions to maintain immobility during the procedures.

Findings:

  • Procedure duration ranged from 10-45 minutes.
  • Recovery times to sternal recumbency and standing varied from 23-76 minutes and 55-105 minutes, respectively.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Despite the horse's age and the demands of repeated anesthesia, no complications were observed.
  • Implications:

    • This case report suggests that a modified injectable anesthetic protocol can be safely employed in aged horses for extended therapeutic procedures.
    • The findings support the use of tiletamine-zolazepam-based anesthesia in equine patients requiring radiation therapy.
    • Further research into long-term effects and optimal protocols for repetitive anesthesia in horses is warranted.
