Summary

Low doses of levodopa/carbidopa temporarily improved visual acuity in children with amblyopia (lazy eye). The treatment was well-tolerated, showing similar results to placebo in terms of side effects.

Background:

  • Amblyopia, or lazy eye, is a common cause of reduced vision in children.
  • Current treatments for amblyopia, such as patching, can be lengthy and have variable success rates.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the efficacy and tolerance of low-dose levodopa/carbidopa in pediatric amblyopia.
  • To compare two different dosages of levodopa/carbidopa against a placebo.

Main Methods:

  • A double-masked, placebo-controlled, randomized study involving 20 children aged 4-14 with amblyopia.
  • Participants received either levodopa/carbidopa (25/6.25 mg or 50/12.5 mg) or placebo (Tums), combined with eye patching.
  • Visual acuity was measured at baseline, 1 hour, and 5 hours post-ingestion; tolerance was evaluated via questionnaire and physical exam.
